Truancy and Truancy Prevention

Truancy CASA Program

Helping Students Reconnect through Advocacy

Since 2016, Voices for Children, CASA of Boulder County has partnered with the 20th Judicial District, St. Vrain Valley School District, and Boulder Valley School District to support youth facing chronic absenteeism through Boulder County’s Truancy Improvement Project (TIP).

When a truancy case is filed, a trained CASA volunteer is often appointed to serve as a consistent, caring adult mentor. These volunteers build meaningful relationships with youth, helping them feel supported, understood, and motivated to return to school.

CASA volunteers

  • Build trust and consistent connection with youth
  • Advocate for students’ needs in court
  • Collaborate with families, educators, and community partners
  • Provide guidance, accountability, and encouragement

By focusing on relationships first, CASA volunteers help students overcome barriers and rediscover a sense of belonging in school.

Truancy Prevention Through Early Mentorship

In 2025, Voices for Children launched a Truancy Prevention Program to support students before court involvement becomes necessary.

Educational Advocates act as mentors and problem-solvers, working one-on-one with youth at risk of chronic absenteeism. Together with families and school staff, they identify challenges and create personalized solutions.

This mentorship-driven approach helps youth:

  • Stay engaged in school
  • Build confidence and resilience
  • Address barriers early
  • Strengthen family and school connections
  • Helps connect youth and family to potential resources
