Trust-Based Relational Intervention®
Trust-Based Relational Intervention®
(TBRI®)
What is Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®)?
TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed framework that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. For children who have experienced abuse and neglect, it is often difficult for them to trust adults and manage their emotions and behaviors. TBRI® offers practical tools and training for parents, caregivers, and anyone who works with children to see the “whole child” in their care, meet their needs, and help that child thrive.
TBRI® uses three sets of principles to help children heal from trauma. Interventions are based on years of research on attachment, sensory processing, neuroscience, and brain development.
- Connecting Principles address attachment and relational needs
- Empowering Principles address physical and environmental needs
- Correcting Principles disarm fear-based behaviors
By offering TBRI® training, we can offer resources to parents and caregivers to build stronger connections with their children. Our CASA staff and volunteers also utilize TBRI® principles in their work to provide wraparound trauma-informed support for the children and families we serve.
TBRI® was developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis at Texas Christian University.
Who Uses TBRI®?
Experiencing trauma, abuse, or neglect impacts the way our bodies, brains, behaviors, and belief systems develop. Children with histories of harm need caregiving that meets their unique needs and addresses the whole child. TBRI® promotes healing and hope for children through nurturing, trusting relationships with a safe adult.
TBRI® is used in homes, schools, residential facilities, group homes, childcare centers, juvenile justice facilities, and courts. The training courses have been translated into over 10 languages and TBRI® is used worldwide to support children from hard places.

“I learned so much from (this training). It taught me a lot about myself. It’s invaluable information to have as a CASA.” - CASA Volunteer
