CASA Lucas Flax
Our November CASA Volunteer of the Month is Lucas Flax
For November, we are honored to recognize Lucas Flax as CASA of the Month. Lucas was sworn in as a volunteer with Voices for Children, CASA of Boulder County in June of 2019. Since then, he has served on four Dependency and Neglect cases, and is now serving on a Juvenile Delinquency case as well. Lucas is an incredible advocate for the youth he works with, ensuring that they have the space to process what is happening in their cases, and advocating for the best interest as part of the professional team.
Lucas' journey to becoming a CASA volunteer began in Arizona, where he volunteered at a children's shelter. He says that "seeing the resiliency of those kids changed my life." Shortly after this, he got involved with CASA, and when he moved to Colorado, he started volunteering with Voices for Children.
Lucas has a wonderful ability to bring the voice of the child into all elements of his advocacy, and is an active member of the professional case team. He visits regularly with his youth, and is often able to share unique information about the youth that other professionals may not have, given their close relationship and bond over the years. Lucas has been appointed on his current case for over four years, and it has been amazing to see how he continues to show up for the youth time and again, through countless ups and downs in the case. Lucas brings a sense of stability and consistency during an uncertain and tumultuous time, and truly embodies the idea that one stable, positive adult can help to change the trajectory of a child's life.
In reflecting on how becoming a CASA volunteer has impacted him, Lucas shared that the success stories demonstrate the power of determination and love. Being able to "see a parent in a tough situation change their life to get their kid back is so powerful."
But his favorite part about being a CASA volunteer is being able to be a kid for a few hours a week. Lucas truly enjoys spending time with his CASA youth, whether that means going fishing, checking out a trampoline park, or making up fun new games. Lucas says being able to see the world through the eyes of a child is very rewarding.
Lucas, especially during this season of giving thanks, we are so grateful for your dedication to advocating for children and families in our community. Congratulations on being our November CASA of the Month!
